APIS – protecting honey bees against Nosema infections

APIS augments the endogenous heme synthesis pathway in Escherichia coli to overproduce protoporphyrin IX (PPIX), a heme synthesis intermediate. PPIX belongs to a class of molecules known as porphyrins, which have been shown to decrease the Nosema spore load in honey bees when ingested.
